Green Lantern [2011]

I have to admit, when I wanted to watch the Green Lantern, my expectations were a little low.  First was because Ray Reynolds was known more for being featured in Romantic Comedy movies, and the thought of him being a super hero was a little 'weird'.  Secondly, it was because Green Lantern is in fact 'green'... uhhh... not my favorite colour.

Anyway, the movie eventually turned out very well as Ray Reynolds managed to combine his antics normally used in his Romance-Comedy movies with serious action stuff.  While I still couldn't get used to the green suit, the movie itself was entertaining enough to keep me well glued to the screen.

The only problem I had with the movie was that it ended in such an abrupt manner, despite the build up from the start.  It would be more exciting to see more fights against 'evil'.  The one shown was just too brief and simple.  Great movie. Catch it in cinemas.

X-Men First Class [2011]

For some odd reason, X-Men is moving backwards in time with the latest installment dated on how X-Men was first formed.  The movie didn't have many mind blowing effects, but the storyline is well crafted.

For those of you wondering how everything began, this is the movie to watch.  You get to know how Professor Xavier became Professor X, how mystique ended with Magneto and even how the helmet used by Magneto is actually made in Russia!

One problem I had with this movie was the casting.  Compared to the other X-Men movies, I felt this First Class didn't have the 'stars' with some of them looking too fragile.  Even Professor X wasn't looking convincing himself. Well, probably it's just me being to used to the older X-Men movies.  Anyway, a great watch. Catch it in cinemas. It's so worth it!  If you want to catch the 'older X-men, get the X-Men Trilogy (X-Men/ X2 - X-Men United/ X-Men - The Last Stand).

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides [2011]

Popular movie featuring Johnny Depp, Pirates Of The Caribbean comes back with a new sequel, On Stranger Tides.  Went to see it on Monday after numerous dissapointment (also I didn't want to watch it in 3D), and it was okay.  The new line up was less impressive altough Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) was at his usual best.  I kind of missed the old cast.

The story line was expected, but there was no more 'wow' factor.  I guess the directors and script writers ran dry on ideas and the movie didn't look as amazing as it used to be.  nonetheless, it was great entertainment, just that, it got too dry due to a repetition of many familiar scene (re-used antics).

At that point, did anyone realize they even used the same island?

Super 8 [2011]

Super 8 may sound like a superhero movie, but it's not.  It's about a bunch of kids, yes kids moving about making a movie of their own while unluckily stumbling upon something alien which the US Air Force is trying to hide.  To be honest, there wasn't anything special about this movie EXCEPT the derailment of the train which I thought was superbly done.  Best to give this movie a skip or just rent out a DVD.

Oh, the romance between Alice & Joe should be played in more detail.. but yeah, it's a real pitty since they are just kids. I would love to see how they grow up together... Final words on this movie, KIDS STUFF... blarghhh..

The Priest (2011)

The Priest does look promising on it's synopsis and poster, but it fails to even bring any excitement.  Although the movie did show off some good scenes and also action, it was luke warm and anti-climax.  The plot was also almost typical where the hero a.k.a 'The priest' defies his leaders and goes against the villains, unauthorized.
The movie however is worth a watch if you are intending to see how the world would be if the church became too strong.  The movie I believe takes example to the dark ages when the church sold confessions for profit.  The only difference is, the movie depicts the future.  Not a bad movie to fill time, but I bet there are better choices available.

The Rite (2011)

The Rite strikes me as a movie close to the Christian heart as it does bring chills for those lacking in faith, as depicted in the movie.  There's less movie effects in the movie, but the plot of the movie was wicked enough to make you glued.

If you are a Christian, you'd leave the movie hall feeling refreshed over your religion and how it can make a difference in your life.  It would also make you think of what have you done for 'Him', despite what 'He' has done for you. Overall, I enjoyed the movie although it wouldn't beat the very first movie involving exorcism, which is The Exorcist.

Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa [2011]

For a Malay movie, this action movie is quite decent as it has almost everything, action, gore and romance.  I believe this movie is a start to greater things for the Malaysian movie industry, and I hope to see more coming which are on par with those ancient movies done by China ad Hong Kong at least.  The movie which revolves about historical figure Merong Mahawangsa starts off promisingly and it does ends well.  The plot itself is a little shaky and the movie itself does get the usual 'Malaysian movie syndrome' which is the feeling that everything is scripted and lacks passion.

On that note, I felt that the casting director could have done a better job for the heroes/good guys because they lacked 'stature'.  However, the 'bad side' aka Garuda was brilliant.  I personally didn't like the Malay language used in the movie as it was too 'antique' for me. As for the advance CGI boasted by the producers, well.. it's not far to be as good as Hollywood.  Overall, a good movie worth watching.

Drive Angry (2011)

When a movie features Nicholas Cage, you'd expect a bomb or an unforgettable movie because his previous movies Next which were never disappointing, and his Texas accent was "ummpphh!!".  Problem was, Drive Angry was a fluke for Mr Nicholas from where I was seating as there was little to talk about. The movie plot was weak, and despite Nicholas Cage's attempt to save the movie with his brilliant antics in acting, it just went down the drain through the movie.   I actually slept through some of the scenes. I'd recommend this movie for a watch when you are utterly bored.

Shaolin [2011]

Shaolin strikes me as one of the best movies ever made as it combines the likes of Nicholas Tse, Andy Lau and Jackie Chan.  The movie shows little about romance, but is filled with and exciting journey of a previous dictator which is remorseful towards his previous actions, particularly when he was the one betrayed by his most trusted soldier. If you are unsure about what Shaolin is all about, do get The Shaolin Monastery: History, Religion, and the Chinese Martial Arts to know more.

Jackie Chan, looking a little more 'healthy' serves as a cook, but his contribution as a 'guest star' is not as little as one would expect as he managed to pull off several 'trademark Jackie Chan' stuns which were very pleasent to see.  The mood of the movie itself is gripping, making you sink even more in the atmosphere.  A must watch movie.  It deserves more praise than it has been given.

Kurafat (2011)

Directed by award winning director, Datuk Yusof Haslam, Kurafat strikes many as a perfect horror movie which many Malays seem to engage with.  Nonetheless, despite the twist at the very end, the horror movie seems a little to predictable with some scenes appearing to be pre-arranged, which is something the director should address.  For instance, it is rather illogical for one to enter a room and leave it dark, and it's funny how a husband can't wake up despite being called upon his already scared wife.  Anyway, on a positive note, Kurafat is indeed a good try, just that its too typical to expect any sudden scare.  Enjoyed watching it, but no heart beat runs reported. Maybe you could try reading Ghost which is equally good.

Lagenda Budak Setan Pt 1 (2010)

The story of Lagenda Budak Setan (in English: Lagend of The Devil's Son) is a little bit like A Walk to Remember in many ways in terms of plot.  While A Walk to Remember does display a more realistic approach, the plots found in Lagenda Budak Setan seems a little to good to be true.  Anyway, while I can dwell over the bad or unreal side of the movie, I must commend the plot of the movie which kept me guessing over what actually happened to Ayu, the girl  Kasyaf loves to death that he remains loyal.  To be honest, the minute Ayu got married with Azmi, the movie turned from boring to interesting due to the huge turn of plots, and I find myself intrigued to know what will happen in part to of this movie.
